Great Expectations is a coming of age story through struggles of identity and goals that is aided by the company of friendship. This is not a love story, but rather a story of friendship where weeks, months, years pass by and you pick up where you left off. As the friends face great expectations from their parents and themselves, the test for a balance of expectations and reality occurs. Despite the challenges of personal identity, family disagreements, and career goals, the protagonists progress through their journey with admirable strength and support for each other. The reflections and flashbacks of Crystal, Kevin, and Hieu compare the present trio to their past experiences. As the trio gets older and reminiscence on the life lessons and experiences they have shared together, the story comes full circle emphasizing the importance of friendship despite the time that passes by.
